This is the first hymn written by Civilla D. Martin. This hymn came about one Sunday when her husband, evangelist Walter Stillman Martin was scheduled to preach at a church some distance away from where they were staying. Civilla was feeling ill, so was unable to accompany him. He wondered if he should stay home to take care of her instead of traveling to his scheduled service. Their young son responded that if God would certainly take care of his mother if he wanted his father to preach. That afternoon, feeling better, Civilla wrote this song, inspired by her son's admonition. When Dad got home, he sat down at the organ and composed the music to accompany her hymn.
Mrs. Martin went on to write lyrics for hundreds of hymns, the most well known being "His Eye Is On the Sparrow."
